UK Masters Degree

Universities from the United Kingdom offer a variety of post-graduate courses that help in career advancement. The types of UK masters degree are: MSc (Master of Science), MA (Master of Arts), MEd (Master of Education), MBA (Master of Business Administration), and LLM (Master of Law).(1)

The following documents are needed in applying for a master's degree program in the UK: academic records, standardized tests, work experience details, letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose (SOP).(2) Most UK universities also evaluate the application form and the applicant's eligibility. Application forms can be downloaded from the university's website. Applicants can also fill-up online application forms that are posted in the website. Applicants are advised to make inquiries and submit application forms one year or 18 months before the potential admission date.

Many UK universities accept a bachelor's degree from a reputable Indian university or its equivalent for the applicant to be accepted in a master's degree program. Indian bachelor degrees such as B.A., B.Com., or B.Sc. are usually considered as equivalent to a British Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree.

UK masters degree program applicants need to submit an official transcript from every college or university they attended with detailed information about the courses taken. Each transcript should have an official seal from the university or college. If the original transcripts are non-English, English translations of the transcripts should be enclosed.

Most UK universities and colleges require international students to take the International English Language Test (IELTS) which is given by the British Council. However, some UK universities accept the TOEFL as a substitute for the IELTS. Other UK universities may also waive the IELTS if the applicant presents convincing proofs of English proficiency. UK management courses also require applicants to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).(3) Work experience details are usually needed in applying for post-graduate professional and vocational courses. These include Master in Business Administration and Master in Information Studies programs. The applicant should submit a resumé with complete information about work experience and other relevant details.

Aside from academic records and work experience details, applicants for UK masters degree programs also need to submit letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose (SOP). The letter of recommendation should be signed by a former teacher or work supervisor who has good knowledge about the applicant's work experience and capabilities. The applicant should submit at least two letters of recommendation to increase his or her chances of admission to a UK master's degree program. The SOP is an essay which specifies the applicant's reasons for choosing a particular course, the relevance of the applicant's previous education and work experience as related to the course, and the applicant's career goals and interests.
